Kalamaki, Crete (Greece)

The small village of Kalamaki lies far away from mass tourism, on the south coast of Crete (65 km from the Heraklion airport).

The friendly, small, and quiet hotels -- all rooms with balcony or terrace, showers/WC, refrigerator or mini-kitchen, air-conditioning, if needed; -- are situated less than 70m from the village beach and boardwalk with its tavernas and cafés. The sandy beach extends to the south for about 3 km (clothing is very optional in this section) to Kommos. (with archaeological site). The picturesque villages of Kamilari and Pitsidia are within walking distance,(approx. 45 min.)

Caretta (loggerhead) turtles lay their eggs on the beach during the summer; the nests are protected by conservationists until hatching time in late summer and fall.
